June 2010 - Tiki Cocktails                             Back to Drink of the Month

Do any of you remember Trader Vic's? Anyone been to the Tiki Room at the Waldorf? And of course the Tikibar TV - If you haven't already watched some of Vancouver's own Tiki Bar.....“Forbidden cocktails in a swank pad” http://www.tikibartv.com

Tiki drinks and the Tiki theme have gone in and out of fashion since the first Tiki bar was opened in Hollywood in 1934. Trader Vis'c unfortunately closed its doors in 1996, but the Waldorf still has a Tiki room.

Here are some Tiki faves to kick of another great summer of patios and BBQs!

Mai Tai (from About.com)

This is the authentic traditional Mai Tai recipe from the "Mai Tai" Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. The original Mai Tai was created by Victor J. Bergeron in 1944 and brought to Hawaii in 1953 at the Royal Hawaiian, Moana and Surfrider Hotels.

Ingredients:
  • 1 oz. Dark Rum
  • 1 oz Light Rum
  • 1 oz Orange Curacao
  • 2 oz Orange Juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • Dash Orgeat
  • Dash Simple syrup (bar syrup

Combine all of the ingredients in the order listed in a Old Fashioned style glass over shaved ice. Stir with a swizzle stick. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry.

Zombie (Classic) (from drinksmixer.com)

1/2 oz Bacardi 151 rum
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz orange juice
1/2 oz apricot brandy
1 tsp sugar
2 oz light rum

Blend all ingredients with ice except Bacardi 151 proof rum. Pour into a collins glass. Float Bacardi 151 proof rum on top. Garnish with a fruit slice, sprig of mint and a cherry.

Zombie (toned down version, Waldorf Hotel, Vancouver in the Vancouver Sun September 2009)

1 oz dark rum

1 oz white rum

2 oz pineaple juice

2 oz sweetened lime juice

Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well.  Strain into large glass.

"Roland's Splash" (Vancouver's Waldorf special drink in the Vancouver Sun September 2009)

This drink isn't rum-based like most Tiki drinks. One of these, and I'd be done for the night!

1/2 oz gin

1/2 oz white rum

1/2 oz vodka

1/2 oz tequila

1/4 oz Blue Curacao

3 to 4 oz pineapple juice

Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well.  Strain into large glass.
