June 2007 - Whiskey Sour

Whiskey Sour

Sours are names given to drinks flavoured with lemon or lime juice.  Although traditionally made with whiskey, they can be made with any spirit.  If you prefer drinks that are less-sweet (like me), omit the sugar.  Or if you are carb-conscious, try sweetening with stevia, a natural sweetener available at most health food shops.

Ingredients:

2 oz blended whiskey
juice of 1/2 lemons
1/2 tsp powdered sugar (or 1 tsp sugar syrup) – optional

1 cherry
1/2 slice lemon

Instructions:

Shake blended whiskey, lemon juice, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Whiskey Gimmer

I haven’t tried this, but I think it would be a lot less sweet than the traditional Whiskey Sour. It sounds like a good summer patio drink. For the diet-conscious, try soda water instead of tonic (no sugar).

Ingredients:

1 measure whiskey
1 measure fresh lemon juice
3 measures tonic.
Ice

Instructions:

Shake blended whiskey and lemon juice with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass.  Add tonic and stir.
